Welcome to Day 2! We will kick off the second day with a series of lightning talks from incredible young activists from across the country, each sharing stories from their frontline advocacy, as well as their own visions for where we’re headed and how we can work together. We’ll also have the chance to hear from and reflect on the incredible legacy, lessons and wisdom of elders who have paved the way for future generations.

Morning tea

10:45m - 11:15am

Grab a bite to eat and connect with others you haven't met yet, before the next round of skills workshops.

SKILLS breakouts

11:15am - 12:30pm

Six different opportunities for you to sharpen your skills in campaigning and advocacy.

These are the same as the skills breakouts from Day 1, so we encourage you to choose something different.

  • Messaging and Comms

    Breakout Room 1

Learn early insights from Passing the Message Stick, a groundbreaking message research project to find the messages that build widespread public support for transformative change on First Nations issues. Understand the value of strengths-based messaging and take away practical do’s and don’ts to improve your communications.

  • Campaign strategy

    Breakout Room 2

Learn the key concepts and take away practical tools to help build your very own campaign strategy. We’ll touch on the role of power (and how to shift it), theory of change, mapping your targets, power mapping, audiences, critical paths and an overview of different roles in a movement.

  • Media training

    Breakout Room 3

Learn vital media communication skills to maximise your campaign impact, including media theory, understanding the media landscape, what makes a story newsworthy, how to craft compelling key messages, and how to deliver your message in a powerful and succinct way.

  • Community organising

    Breakout Room 4

What’s the difference between mobilising and organising? What are circles of commitment? You’ll walk away with answers to these questions and more, including understanding the basics of community organising and how we can use it to build the people power needed to win systemic change.

  • Digital organising

    Breakout Room 5

How can we use the digital world as a tool to build people power? Learn the basics of digital organising, from list management through to audience mapping and engagement, tips and tricks to cut through social media algorithms and how to run engaging and accessible online events and actions.

  • Government relations

    Breakout Room 6

Learn how to navigate parliament at state and federal levels, understand policy cycles and practical tips for engaging with decision makers, from how to secure a meeting, to preparing and following up afterwards. We’ll also share frameworks to help you prepare and deliver a clear pitch on your issue.

Each group will have a spokesperson to report back in the closing plenary, with goals and key moments being added to a shared timeline. These conversations will build on the Day 1 campaign breakouts – we encourage you to attend the same breakout as yesterday.

In this final closing plenary, we will reconvene for a report back from each campaign breakout group. We will consolidate our next steps, including opportunities to collaborate over the coming months and ways in which we can take this back home to our communities beyond the summit.
